Former Elections Secretary to Head Ethics Agency (Jan 11, 2013)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An attorney and former Oklahoma Election Board secretary has been selected as the new director of the state Ethics Commission.

The commission's governing board on Friday voted unanimously to select 69-year-old Lee Slater to head the agency for an annual salary of $120,000 beginning Feb. 1. Slater said he planned to work part-time at a pro-rated salary until July 1 while he finishes work at his private law practice.

Slater's law practice focused mostly on campaign finance and lobbyist regulations. He also served as legal counsel for the Oklahoma Senate.

Slater served as Oklahoma's Election Board Secretary from 1971 to 1988 before starting his private practice.

He was selected from a group of about 50 applicants to replace the commission's retiring Executive Director Marilyn Hughes.
