Norman Police Warn of Telephone Scam (Jan 16, 2013)

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Police in Norman are warning of a telephone scam that investigators say appears to be targeting grandparents.

Capt. Tom Easley said Wednesday that the scammers are calling people and pretending to be the intended victim's grandchild and in need of money because they've been arrested or in an accident in a foreign country or large U.S. city.

Easley says the scammer pushes the intended victim to wire usually between $2,000 and $4,000 quickly and that the victim usually learns shortly afterward their grandchild or other relative is not in danger or in any trouble.
