Vignola, Kenton and Jackson... Oh my! (Jan 24, 2013)

What a weekend it is for music in Oklahoma City. From jazz to Jackson (Michael), I’ll be filling you in on the three can’t-miss concerts (in my humble opinion) taking place this weekend. But if music just isn’t for you, stay with me because I have another option that runs all weekend long.

An “Evening with Frank Vignola” takes place this Thursday at the Oklahoma City Community College Bruce Owen Theatre. This guitarist has made his way onto Les Paul’s “Five Most Admired Guitarists” list. Watch him shred Beethoven’s 5th to judge for yourself. The concert starts at 7:00 p.m. and runs until 9:00 p.m.

After spending Thursday night watching a man that The New York Times named “one of the brightest stars of guitar,” you may want more music entertainment. If that’s the case, I have two potential Friday night options for you.

First, the University of Central Oklahoma’s Jazz Lab honors Stan Kenton with a performance from the Edmond Jazz Orchestra. A former saxophonist of Kenton’s original band, Joel Kaye, conducts the ensemble. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. at UCO’s Jazz Lab in Edmond.

And the Oklahoma City Philharmonic brings the music of Michael Jackson to the stage on both Friday and Saturday night. The orchestra covers songs from the King of Pop’s childhood in the Jackson Five to his Thriller album and beyond. Both shows start at 8:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Music Hall.

Finally, if Michael Jackson, Stan Kenton or Frank Vignola doesn’t interest you, I offer you the 58th annual Oklahoma City Winter Boat Show. The event has hundreds of boats on site, along with fishing tackle, ski equipment, and boating accessories. And rumor has it there will also be an on-site fishing simulator. The show runs Thursday through Sunday at the State Fair Park.
