State Senator Requests Insurance Audit (Feb 08, 2013)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A Republican state senator is asking Gov. Mary Fallin to request a performance audit of the Oklahoma Insurance Department after reports of spending tens of thousands of dollars on motivational books, chamber memberships, uniforms, weapons and catering.

Sen. Harry Coates sent a letter to Fallin on Thursday requesting the audit.

The Associated Press reported in November that the agency spent more than $180,000 on shotguns, bulletproof vests and police vehicles for its anti-fraud unit. The Tulsa World detailed tens of thousands of dollars in spending by the agency on motivational books, catering, chamber memberships and other things.

Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak said in a statement that the agency commissioned a full audit in October and he says an additional audit would be a ``waste of time and money.''
