School Security Tasks Force Begins Study (Feb 12, 2013)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Members of a state task force on school security that was created after the deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school are studying ways to prevent similar incidents in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Commission on School Security on Tuesday began studying 39 school safety and security proposals they will use to formulate a final list of recommendations. Those recommendations will be released on March 5 for possible legislative action.

The proposals include increasing the level of mental health intervention and treatment for students who exhibit troubling behavior. Several proposals involve increased training and professional development for school staffs to prevent bullying and to improve the emergency preparedness of schools.

A 2008 law called the Oklahoma School Security Act requires public school districts to conduct lockdown drills at each public school.
