OHP Pay Raise Bill Passes Committee (Feb 21, 2013)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers and state prison workers would see pay hikes under a pair of bills approved by a House committee.

The House Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Public Safety easily passed both measures on Thursday. They now head to the full House Appropriations Committee.

The bill to increase trooper pay would boost the starting salary of a new officer from $33,192 to $38,602. The bill would cost about $7.3 million annually.

A separate measure to increase pay for state prison workers would cost about $12.2 million. It would boost the starting pay for correctional officers from $11.83 per hour to $14 per hour. Other Department of Corrections employees would get a 5 percent pay boost under the bill.
