Indian Times: Memorial Day - A Daughter's Remembrance (May 22, 2009)
This week on Indian Times, we observe Memorial Day with a daughter?s remembrance of her late father?s military career. Suzan Shown Harjo (pictured at left), president of the Morning Star Institute in Washington, D.C., talks about her dad, Freeland E. Douglas. Among his many military awards are the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Purple Heart.
Harjo, who is Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee, has left her mark as well through the writing of laws, such as the 1978 American Indian Religious Freedoms Act and the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, to name just two.
