Indian Times: Osage Nation in 10th Circuit Court of Appeals (Jan 16, 2010)
This week on Indian Times,, the Osage Nation was in the 10th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, Colorado this week to argue that what the tribe considers to be the Osage Indian Reservation has the same boundaries as Osage County. Essentially, in 1872 Congress agreed with that assessment and has never disestablished the reservation. Osage Congressperson Shannon Edwards talks about why taxation is at the heart of this legal action. A decision from the appellate judges may come within four months according to a court official.

A re-release CD of sessions taped in Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa came from the group Johnson, Brown & West this week. I spoke with singer/songwriter Jon West, a member of the Southern Cheyenne Nation of Oklahoma. Of the eight songs on the CD perhaps the most haunting is ?Cheyenne Winter.? It tells the story of the 1864 Sand Creek massacre of peaceful Cheyennes by Col. John Chivington & the 1st & 3rd Colorado Cavalry. This song closes out the program.
