Cuts to Amtrak Subsidies Could Mean End of Heartland Flyer Service (Apr 04, 2005)
Earlier this year, President Bush released his 2006 federal budget proposal. The proposal would eliminate the current $1.2 billion subsidy to Amtrak passenger rail service, effectively eliminating the Heartland Flyer route between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth. Activists in favor of keeping the rail service are holding a rally at the Oklahoma state capitol next Monday to call attention to the issue. Guests include Evan Stair, Executive Director and Founder of Passenger Rail Oklahoma; Joe Kyle, Manager of Rail Programs at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation; Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and Heartland Flyer passenger Warren Queton.
