In-Depth: Before Arizona, There Was House Bill 1804 (May 25, 2010)
The recent passage of Arizona’s controversial law is bringing the issue of illegal immigration issue to the forefront. Oklahoma’s own contentious anti-illegal immigration law passed in 2007, and portions of House Bill 1804 have been tied up in the courts ever since. In April, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked two parts of the law; one allowing fired legal workers to sue employers who retain undocumented workers, and another that would make businesses pay the top tax rate for employees they can’t prove are in the country legally. The court upheld provisions requiring public employers and contractors working with the government to use a federal electronic database, known as E-Verify, to check the immigration status of workers.
