Earthquake Magnitude Lowered (Oct 15, 2010)

The Oklahoma Geological Survey says its analysis of data from Wednesday’s earthquake indicates a previously unknown fault line may be responsible for the temblor.

The survey also says the temblor isn't related to earthquakes that have been reported in eastern Oklahoma County or in Arkansas. Two small aftershocks have been reported since Wednesday, and more are possible following an earthquake that rattled parts of the state.

Yesterday, survey officials lowered their magnitude estimate of the earthquake from 5-point-1 to 4-point-7 after additional analysis.

The U-S. Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of Wednesday's quake to be 4-point-3. And while the shaking rattled buildings and nerves, officials say the earthquake is considered to be small to moderate in size.
