Ponca City Republican Tapped for Budget Chair (Nov 10, 2010)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Ponca City Republican David Myers has been tapped to head the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.

Senate President Pro Tempore-designate Brian Bingman announced Myers' appointment on Wednesday.

The appropriations chairmen in the House and Senate typically are involved in budget negotiations with the governor's office. Myers served the last two years as vice chairman under Sen. Mike Johnson, who is term-limited.

Bingman was elected by his Republican colleagues on Wednesday as the next leader of the GOP-controlled Senate. He replaces outgoing Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn Coffee, who also is term-limited.

Bingman acknowledged the upcoming legislative session likely will result in significant budget cuts to state programs.
