Hearing Today on Islamic Law Lawsuit (Nov 22, 2010)

A federal judge in Oklahoma City will consider a request this morning to block State Question 755 from going into effect.

The executive director of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Muneer Awad, is asking the federal judge to stop the state election board from certifying the results of the November 2nd ballot.

Four non-profit groups based in Virginia last week filed a brief in support of the state question. They argue keeping Oklahoma courts from being able to use Islamic law would protect women from a variety of activities, including underage marriage and polygamy.

But Awad says practitioners of Islam have to abide by the law of the land. He also says State Question 755 unconstitutionally singles out a single religion. Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange ruled earlier this month for a temporary injunction in the case.
