State Treasurer Thinks Office Should be Appointive (Dec 06, 2010)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Outgoing state Treasurer Scott Meacham thinks the office should be appointive, not elective, but Treasurer-elect Ken Miller disagrees with that assessment.

Meacham says because the post is a technical job, it should be appointive. He says the odds of having a "better quality person" in the office would improve if it was appointive.

Gov. Brad Henry appointed Meacham to the post in 2005 to fill out the expiring term of Robert Butkin. Voters elected Meacham to a full term in 2006.

Miller says he thinks it's good the treasurer's position is an elective one. The Oklahoman reports that most states elect their treasurers, but that the position is appointed by the governor in 11 states.

Miller says Meacham has been helpful in ensuring a smooth transition in the treasurer's office.
