OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The second meeting of the state Board of Education under Superintendent Janet Barresi was quiet as an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper was on hand for security.

The meeting Thursday was the first since last month's contentious meeting in which board member Tim Gilpin called Barresi a "dictator" and fellow member Herb Rozell said a legislative liaison would be "worthless" if she took maternity leave while the Legislature was in session.

Gilpin remained polite and most of his questions concerned proposed funding for the Department of Education for the upcoming fiscal year. Rozell was absent.

Gilpin says most of the board's meetings are as "dull and friendly" as the one Thursday and that he hopes the congenial attitude continues in the future. Barresi says she "would prefer calm to chaos" during meetings.
