Wind Farm in Works for Oklahoma Tribes (Apr 21, 2011)

CONCHO, Okla. (AP) — The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes are working with a Kansas company on a wind farm project.

Chester Whiteman, the tribes' director of economic development, said Thursday the 22 100-kilowatt turbines that will go up on tribal land near the Lucky Star Casino could save the tribes as much as $9.2 million during the next 40 years.

The tribe is working with West Wind Energy LLC of Otis, Kan., on the project, which is being partially paid for with federal grant money. Scott Brantley, the company's CEO, says he hopes to build a wind turbine manufacturing plant on tribal land within the next few years.

Tribal Gov. Janice Boswell says the goal is for the tribes to be completely powered by renewable energy.
