Committee OKs Guns on CareerTech Campuses (May 10, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahomans with a license to carry a concealed firearm would be allowed to keep their weapon secured in their vehicle on CareerTech campuses under a bill signed out of a House committee.

CareerTech officials opposed the bill — but it received enough signatures on Monday from members of the House Public Safety and Judiciary Committee to move out of committee. The bill still must pass the House and Senate.

Supporters of the bill say law-abiding citizens who are authorized to carry a concealed weapon should not be forced to leave their gun at home when they drive onto a CareerTech campus.

Opponents argue that having more guns on campus is a safety concern and that approval of the measure could result in increased costs for liability insurance.
