Edmond Lutheran Church Changes Denominations (May 16, 2011)

EDMOND, Okla. (AP) — A Lutheran church in Edmond is breaking away from the denomination's main branch and will join another Lutheran group.

Peace Lutheran Church members voted 109-6 on Sunday to cut its ties with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or ELCA.

Peace Lutheran now will be a part of the Hilliard, Ohio-based North American Lutheran Church, a denomination created by groups dissatisfied with the ELCA.

Joe Palmer, the congregation's president and president of the church council, tells The Oklahoman that Peace Lutheran's ties with the ELCA will officially end June 30.

Palmer says Peace Lutheran's decision to leave the ELCA came because the congregation thinks the national group is departing from Scripture.

A spokesman for the ELCA says it respects Peace Lutheran's right to choose its own path.
