GOP Leaders Pleased with Accomplishments (May 19, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — With control of the Legislature and the governor's office for the first time in history, Oklahoma Republicans are hailing their work in the 2011 legislative session as a success.

However, Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman said Thursday that a bill targeting illegal immigration was one GOP priority that will be left unfinished this year.

Bingman and House Speaker Kris Steele created a task force that developed an illegal immigration bill focused primarily on human smuggling and those who prey on illegal immigrants. The bill was derailed this week when Democrats in the House joined with Republicans who maintained the bill didn't go far enough.

Legislative leaders hope to end the session Friday.
