Labor Dept. Awards Aid to Tornado Victims (Jun 01, 2011) OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A National Emergency Grant has been awarded to the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission to create temporary jobs for cleanup and other efforts to recover from a deadly tornado that hit in the southern part of the state last month. The U.S. Department of Labor announced that the $471,150 grant is aimed at the May 6 storm in Atoka County, which killed two people. Labor Department officials say National Emergency Grants are part of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis' discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. May was a deadly month in terms of tornadoes for Oklahoma. An outbreak last week killed 10 people in central Oklahoma. « back |
