Algae Warning Issued for Part of Lake Eufaula (Jul 19, 2011)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say they've discovered another dangerous outbreak of blue-green algae — this time at Lake Eufaula in eastern Oklahoma.

Corps spokesman Ross Adkins says tests confirm toxins in the algae bloom discovered at Gentry Creek near Checotah on the northern edge of the lake.

He says boaters and swimmers are being told to avoid that area and that tests are being conducted in other parts of the lake.

The blistering heat has exacerbated the problem of blue-green algae blooms, which have led to ongoing advisories at Keystone and Fort Gibson lakes in northeast Oklahoma.

An advisory also was issued for Grand Lake before the Fourth of July weekend. That advisory has since expired.
