TPS Driver Lauded for Getting Kids off School Bus (Nov 29, 2011)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A Tulsa Public Schools bus driver is being honored for helping get 15 children off a burning school bus.

AAA Oklahoma and the Tulsa school district presented Yolanda Palmer with a plaque Monday for acting quickly when the vehicle caught fire Nov. 21.

Palmer said she pulled to the side of the road about 7:30 that morning because of engine problems and then saw flames coming from the engine compartment.

She says she told the children to evacuate the bus, and turned her back to the flames so that the students could cross in front of her.

Palmer says she tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher but they were spreading too fast. She moved the children to a safe distance away from the bus.
