Luper, Budke Among Notable Oklahoma Deaths in 2011 (Dec 30, 2011)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A civil rights icon, two Oklahoma State University basketball coaches and a former prosecutor were among the notable Oklahomans who died in 2011.

Clara Luper, known for her attempt to purchase soft drinks at an Oklahoma City drug store lunch counter where only whites were served, died June 8 at age 88.

Her defiant act that day in 1958 led to the desegregation of lunch counters at Katz Drugs Stores in Oklahoma and three other states, and launched the nation's sit-in movement.

Cowgirls head coach Kurt Budke; assistant coach Miranda Serna; pilot Olin Branstetter and his wife, Paula, were killed when their plane crashed in Arkansas Nov. 17.

Former Oklahoma County District Attorney Bob Macy, known for his pursuit of the death penalty in murder cases, died Nov. 18.
