McALESTER, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma man who was convicted of a fatal stabbing nearly two decades ago is set to be executed tonight by lethal injection.

Without a last-minute reprieve, Gary Welch will be the first person to be executed in the country this year.

He was denied clemency last month and is scheduled to be executed at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.
