OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded nearly $1 million in funding for seven new programs to help the homeless in Oklahoma.

Officials announced Tuesday that the $953,148 in funding will provide emergency shelter, transitional housing and permanent support for individuals and families.

The City of Oklahoma City received the largest amount of funding, $278,127, through the Supportive Housing Program. Landing Inc. of Fairland was awarded $253,995 and Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless received $213,112 through the same program.

The Supportive Housing Program offers housing and supportive services to allow homeless people to live as independently as possible. Other recipients were Central Oklahoma Community Action, $113,719, and Food and Shelter for Friends, $25,315.

The Norman Housing Authority/Thunderbird Clubhouse received $68,880 through the Shelter Plus Care program.
