State House Passes Abortion Lawsuit Bill (Mar 15, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Women who receive abortions would have broader authority to sue their doctors or a referring hospital under a bill that has cleared the Oklahoma House.

The House voted 76-10 on Thursday for the bill that allows women to sue abortion providers that fail to comply with a host of state laws regulating the practice. The bill also allows women or the parents of a minor to sue a doctor or hospital that referred the woman to the abortion provider.

Republican Rep. Paul Wesselhoft of Moore says the intent is to ensure that abortionists comply with requirements for parental consent for minors and informed-consent abortion laws.

Several Democrats objected to a procedural move by Wesselhoft that prohibited them from asking questions about the bill.
