GOP Chairman Plans to Request Recount (Apr 04, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma's Republican Party chairman says a recount by hand will be called for after initial returns in a special election shows a Democrat won by three votes for a seat in the state House of Representatives.

There were also six provisional votes cast in the race that could affect the outcome.

Unofficial returns from the Oklahoma State Election Board show Dan Arthrell received 1,416 votes to 1,413 for Katie Henke in the House District 71 race in central Tulsa on Tuesday.

Henke could not be reached for comment - but state GOP Chairman Matt Pinnell said Wednesday that the recount will be asked for before Friday's 5 p.m. deadline.

The provisional votes will be opened and counted if the persons who cast those ballots are determined to be eligible voters.
