OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A law enforcement spokesman says a bill intended to reduce methamphetamine manufacturing in Oklahoma by tracking sales of a key ingredient in the drug is like "a step backward."

The bill calls for an electronic system to connect with other states and track sales of common cold medicines that contain pseudoephedrine.

Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics spokesman Mark Woodward says sales are already being tracked in real time in Oklahoma and that the proposed system does not yet do that.

The bill also limits the amount of pseudoephedrine a person could purchase to about three boxes per month. Narcotics Bureau Director Darrell Weaver says that would do little to stop people from buying the medicines then selling it to meth cooks.

The bill is awaiting final approval in the state House.
