Wildfire Hits Area South of Lake Thunderbird (Aug 03, 2012)

NOBLE, Okla. (AP) - A wind-whipped wildfire sweeping through rural woodlands south of the Oklahoma City has burned a number of homes as firefighters struggle to contain it in 113-degree heat.

Oklahoma emergency management officials say a handful of homes are among 25 structures burned Friday east of Noble. The sheriff's office has directed residents of 75 to 100 houses to leave the area as flames spread through the treetops. The evacuation area covers about 30 square miles.

There are no immediate reports of injuries or livestock losses from the fires, which also charred areas near Geary and Luther.

The ongoing drought, high temperatures and gusty winds mean it's been easy for fires to begin and spread, and difficult to put them out.

Eleven fires in all are being monitored in Oklahoma Friday afternoon.
