New Dept of Education Audit Released (Oct 29, 2012)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma's top auditor says a new Department of Education audit indicates state employees are still being used to sponsor, organize and host a summer education conference.

An audit released in March criticized the agency's relationship with a non-profit foundation in which bank accounts were not disclosed to the non-profit's board but were utilized to funnel more than $2 million over a 10-year period to host an annual education conference.

Auditor and Inspector Gary Jones said Monday that a new audit indicates the agency also utilized state personnel in a questionable and likely inappropriate manner at last year's Innovation 2011 Conference.

Education department spokeswoman Tricia Pemberton says Schools Superintendent Janet Barresi accepts the auditor's findings and has implemented new policies to ensure the agency complies with the law.
