Bethany Groundwater Under Investigation (Dec 17, 2012)

BETHANY, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality says it's investigating an area of contaminated groundwater in Bethany.

The agency says it's investigating whether the contaminated water is present in private wells. The department says no contaminants have been detected in Bethany's drinking water.

Officials say the contamination is linked to cleaning chemicals used at a former Aero Commander facility at Wiley Post Airport.

The agency says it does not yet know the extent of the contamination. The department wants to identify and sample any existing private wells in an area extending from North Thompkins Avenue to Canal Road and between Northwest 39th Expressway and Northwest 50th Street.

The agency says contaminant levels are relatively low but in some areas may exceed safe levels for drinking water.
