OK Tech Chief Details "Open Range" Plan (Feb 07, 2013)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Gov. Mary Fallin's technology chief says school districts across the state could save millions each year by consolidating their computer systems and services.

Oklahoma's Chief Information Officer Alex Pettit unveiled details of the governor's ``Open Range'' program Thursday before the House Government Modernization Committee. The voluntary program allows school districts to begin consolidating their information technology, or IT, services through the state.

Pettit says the effort could result in millions of dollars of savings for school districts and free up teachers and support personnel who are currently serving as IT employees at smaller districts. Pettit says a similar effort to consolidate state IT services has helped realize annual savings of more than $40 million annually.

Democratic Rep. Richard Morrissette of Oklahoma City says the savings estimates are overinflated.
